The State University of New York at Potsdam, also referred to as SUNY Potsdam or simply Potsdam, is a public university located in the Village of Potsdam, which is located in the Town of Potsdam, in St. Lawrence County, in the US state of New York, having a population estimated at a number of more than 9000 inhabitants, as estimated during the 2000 census.
SUNY Potsdam was established in 1816, being among the 50 oldest colleges in the United States, and was founded by Benjamin Raymond, as St. Lawrence Academy, its current name being adopted in 1964, after the school's mission changed and Potsdam started to offer multiple programs. It is composed of the College of Arts & Sciences, the School of Education and Professional Studies, and the Crane School of Music, through which it offers its students more than 40 majors and 40 minors, including both bachelor's degrees and master's degrees.
SUNY Potsdam's athletic teams are known as the Bears and they compete in NCAA Division III. Their distinctive colors are maroon and gray.
